ASUU Strike Update: ASUU’s NEC Meeting To Hold After 7 Days Mouring Of Iyayi

Contrary to media reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU was to hold it’s National Executives Committee meeting yesterday, the union leader of university of Ibadan, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye has claimed that there was no plan for such meeting.

In solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, has given the Federal Government seven days to resolve the ongoing strike or face a total shut down of electricity facilities in the country.

This latest show of solidarity is coming on the heels of similar warnings given by the Nigerian union of Teachers, NUT, and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, which have both given indication that they will down tools if the strike is not resolved soon enough.

NUEE, while justifying its decision to cause nationwide blackout in solidarity with the striking varsity lecturers, said that it could no longer sit back and watch those in positions of authority destroy the future of young Nigerians, who have remained at home for weeks on account of the Federal Government’s refusal to meet the legitimate demands by ASUU.

NUT threatens to go on strike, Gives FG & ASUU 2 weeks ultimatum

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has given a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the strike embarked upon by lecturers in the nation's public universities.

The NUT President, Mr. Michael Olukoya, stated this in Abuja at the end of the union's meeting, NAN reported. ASUU, had since July 1, embarked on a strike it described as "comprehensive, total and indefinite." 
Olukoya said members of the union would not hesitate to close down the nation's schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks.

He described the current ASUU strike as nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing. 
He said, "We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfil or honour the agreement with the lecturers." 

The lecturers are protesting against the non- implementation of an agreement they entered into with the Federal Government in 2009.
