Akpabio assures Weightlifting of support

Gov GodswillAkpabio yesterday declared open the Uyo 2013 National weightlifting championship with a pledge to coninue supporting the game.
The governor who was represented by the permanent secretary in charge of sports Dr Mrs Ime Umodioh said he is impressed with the performance of the country in weightlifting assuring that he throws his weight behind the game to sustain the country,s excellent showing.

Akpabio noted that Akwa Ibom has produced great lifters for the country.

“We will discover new talents that will step into the shoes of the like of Patrick Bassey, Lawrence Iquaibom and Cosmas Samson, all Akwa Ibom sons who have done this country proud at the international scene.”
NWF president Hon Chibudom Nwuche in his welcome address charged all the lifters to strive to win by fair means and to stay out of drugs.
Twenty states are in Uyo for the championship which ends on Friday.
Yesterday’s colorful ceremony was one in which two kid lifters aged 5 from Cross River thrilled the crowd at Ibom hall.
Coach of the kid lifters Helen Mathew said she is grooming the kids to win medals for the country in another 12 years.
Nwuche who was thrilled with the performance of the kids vowed to monitor their performance even as he decorated them with gold medals
